Japan Rail Pass

The Japan Rail Pass is a favourite with travellers to Japan as it enables unlimited use of the Japan Rail network for the pass duration. This provides visitors excellent value for money, in addition to simplifying the ticket buying process. Passes are available for travel in First Class, known as “Green” or Second Class, know as “Ordinary”. The pass is valid on all JR trains, whether they be local, express or the world-famous Bullet Trains (Shinkansen) with only a few exceptions.

Purchasing a Japan Rail Pass

Purchasing a Japan Rail Pass is a two step process:

  • An Exchange Order must be purchased before departing for Japan.
  • Upon arrival in Japan the Exchange Order must be exchanged for the Japan Rail Pass. This can be done at ticket offices in select train stations, including at Narita Airport. You will have to show your passport and fill in a small form. For a list of stations at which you can do the exchange, please visit: Japan Rail Pass

Please note – the Exchange Order must be changed to a Japan Rail Pass within 3 months of the date of issue of the Order

Using a Japan Rail Pass
  • When you change the Exchange Order for the Japan Rail Pass, you must nominate the start date. This can be the date of exchange or a subsequent date of your choice. Your pass is valid for continuous use from the start date.
  • Your Japan Rail Pass is valid for travel on all JR trains, except Nozomi Shinkansen (one type of Bullet Train).
  • Your Japan Rail Pass is NOT valid for travel on trains run by other companies, for example the Tokyo underground.
Making Seat Reservations
  • Most Bullet Train and express trains have non-reserved seats for which you only need to show your Japan Rail Pass.
  • If you wish to reserve seats, this can be done at ticket offices in train stations by showing your Japan Rail Pass on the day of travel or in advance of travel. No additional charge applies.
  • For those who are planning to travel to Eastern Japan, seat reservations can be made online. Please visit JR East Reservations for further information.
