Skiing in Japan
Due to the topography of Japan, there are ski areas throughout the east of the country. All areas have guaranteed powder snow from late December to April, with some areas until late May. While après ski is available with a number of resort pubs and bars available, the Japanese way is to have soothing soak in a natural hot spring before enjoying delicious local cuisine.
HOKKAIDO
In the northern-most island of Japan you can be skiing from mid-November through to May. Hokkaido offers world-class slopes with spectacular scenery in its many ski areas. Skiing in Hokkaido gives you the opportunity to enjoy the famed fresh produce, including beef and seafood. You are also able to take this opportunity to try soaking in a hot spring. A delicious meal and a hot bath is surely the best possible way to recover from an exciting day on the slopes.
RUSUTSU:
East Mountain, West Mountain and Mt. Isola tower above Rusutsu Resort allowing you to ski right from the doorstep. There are 37 trails, with some over 2 miles long, providing something for everyone from advanced to beginners and children. Experience endless fun for the whole family at Rusutsu with their Snowmobile Land, half pipe, cross-country ski course, Kids Park, and much more on offer.
Rusutsu Resort Hotel also offers the perfect place to return to after an exciting, yet tiring day on the slopes. Rusutsu provides warm, relaxing accommodation with a wide variety of facilities for you to enjoy. Facilities such as, an indoor pool, Gameworld, many restaurants, cafes and bars, shops and karaoke rooms will entertain everyone of any age. For tired muscles after skiing, guests can experience either a Japanese bathhouse in the convenience of the resort, or a local outdoor hot spring where mineral enriched water from nearby mountains will have you relaxed and ready for the next day skiing.
NISEKO:
Niseko is a particularly popular resort with four ski areas, Hanazono, Hirafu, Higashiyama and Annupuri, providing 69 diverse runs with a maximum gradient of 37 degrees. Niseko can then be reached by a two and a half hour train ride from Sapporo, or a three and a half hour bus ride. Skiers of all ability levels are catered for at Niseko, so the whole family can enjoy the world-class powder.
Hotel Nikko Annupuri is conveniently located by Niseko Ski Resort’s Annupuri ground. Guests can easily ski down to the lifts to start the day skiing. The hotel offers both Japanese and Western restaurants for dining and drinking. Feel free to enjoy the guest hot spring baths and sauna, before relaxing with a quiet drink in the lounge area with its inviting log fire.

NAGANO
Nagano Prefecture provides some of the best skiing on Japan's main island of Honshu. The main regions are Hakuba Village, Shiga Kogen and the Nozawa Onsen area. Famed for hosting the 1998 Winter Olympics, events where held at all these places. Nagano offers a number of ski areas and its convenience to Tokyo and central location makes it a popular ski destination for Japanese and foreign visitors alike.
HAKUBA:
Hakuba is probably the most popular area to ski in the heart of the Japanese Alps that go through Nagano. The Hakuba valley has more than 12 ski resorts accessing over 200 ski runs. Fantastic rugged peaks tower over Hakuba Village below providing spectacular alpine scenery to enhance your Hakuba ski experience.
Hakuba Tokyu Hotel is by Hakone Happo One Ski field. Guests can conveniently take the short walk or free shuttle bus to the ski lifts and start a great day skiing. The hotel is also a short walk to Happo Onsen (Hot Springs), or you can use the hotel’s own public hot spring bath. NIIGATA
Niigata is a central Japanese prefecture with many ski resorts to suit skiers and snowboarders of all abilities, with resorts mostly around the Yuzawa and Myoko area. Niigata is a conveniently reached from Tokyo by bullet trains and allows visitors to make the most of a ski holiday even with limited time. After a day out in the snow, enjoy delicious nabe (hot-pot) with Niigata’s fresh seafood straight from the see of the Sea of Japan coast.
NAEBA:
Naeba is arguably the most ‘trendy’ ski resort in Japan with millions of people visiting each year. Located on Mt. Takenoko, it has hosted a number of World Cup ski/snowboard events. Naeba has the world’s largest 8-person ski lift taking 15 minutes from bottom to top – so sit back and enjoy the view.
Naeba Prince Hotel is a spectacular resort hotel with over 1,700 rooms, 23 restaurants, and a shopping mall and more, guests will be spoilt for choice for entertainment beyond the ski runs. The hotel can be reached from Tokyo by bullet train and bus in about 90 minutes. Direct access to great skiing and snowboarding in an exciting and stylish location.
