Visit Matsumoto (dating from as early as 1504) set against a beautiful mountain backdrop. Travel to Tsumago where you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d travelled back in time. | Day 2 | Tokyo Transfer by airport bus to your hotel. Stay for 3 nights. |
| Day 3 | Tokyo Afternoon walking tour of Tokyo;Edo Kagurazaka. |
| Day 4 | Tokyo Free to explore Tokyo, or you may take an optional tour. |
| Day 5 | Tokyo - Matsumoto Begin using your Japan Rail Pass to travel by train to Matsumoto. Stay overnight. |
| Day 6 | Matsumoto - Tsumago (D) Travel by train to the Kiso Valley using your Japan Rail Pass. Upon arrival, free to explore Magome or Tsumago. You may wish to hike some of the Nakasendo Trail, the original highway from Edo (Tokyo) to Kyoto. Stay overnight in Tsumago at a minshuku.* |
| Day 7 | Tsumago - Nagoya (B) Travel by train to Nagoya using your Japan Rail Pass. Stay for 2 nights. |
| Day 8 | Nagoya Free to explore Nagoya, or you may take an optional tour. |
| Day 9 | Nagoya - Kyoto Travel by bullet train to Kyoto using your Japan Rail Pass. Stay for 3 nights. |
| Day 10 | Kyoto Morning sightseeing tour of Kyoto including the Golden Pavilion, Nijo Castle, and Imperial Palace or Nishi Honganji Temple. Afternoon free. |
| Day 11 | Kyoto Free to explore Kyoto, or you may take an optional tour. |
| Day 12 | Kyoto - London Transfer by shared shuttle taxi to Osaka Itami Airport. Depart on a flight to London via Tokyo, arriving the same day. |
*A minshuku is basic accommodation; the equivalent of a B&B but with shared bathroom facilities.
